Hi, Joseph Foyah here,

If you recently had a failed driving test and are looking for a way to pass on your next attempt then I’m really glad you ran across this website and I would strongly encourage you to keep reading.

After I had failed my road test on my first try I decided to take some serious action and find a way to pass for sure on my next try. This site was created as a way to share my story about what I finally did to bounce back from the failed driving test and pass on my second attempt.

My Failed Driving Test Story

My struggle with a failed driving test started back when my family and I moved to the United States from Liberia. I was 16 years old at the time and like any teenager around that age I was eager to get behind the wheel.

As soon as I was able to, I took my permit test, passed, and immediately began practicing with my dad. As we practiced I found myself constantly nervous while driving. I thought it would go away with time but it never really did so I began to worry over the possibility of another failed driving test attempt.

As time went on the idea of a failed driving test slowly disappeared as I gain more confidence in my driving ability. Even though I was still nervous while driving with my Dad I felt as though as I ready and confidant that I was going to avoid a failed road test.

Well the day of the road test came and it’s safe to say that it didn’t go as I had planned in my head. My failed driving test was due to my nervousness. I made a few mistakes but parallel parking was what ultimately resulted in the automatic fail on my driving test.

How I recovered from my failed driving test

After that failed driving test I was so disappointed in myself. I was ashamed to tell my brothers and sisters the result when I got home and afraid that my friends would make fun of me for failing. Even worse I wasn’t going to be able to drive my date to prom that year.

I was determined to not experience all those emotions associated with a failed driving test ever again so I began to look for help. I knew I was a good driver so I figured if I could find what exactly the driving instructors are looking for and master those then I would surely pass the test.

Luckily enough for me I stumbled across the “Get Ready To Pass” Driving Test Guide.

This guide was exactly what I needed and had been looking for to help me bounce back from the failed driving test.

What the guide taught me about failed driving test

The first thing I learned from the guide was that 50% of people fail driving test on their first try. It immediately put me at ease and no longer felt so dumb for failing my driving test.  With knowledge of this little fact my nervousness began to decline quickly. I no longer felt alone.

The Guide also included video tutorials on all the technical tasks driving instructor grade on, including parallel parking, three-point turns, limit lines, left and right turns, roadside stops, reading other drivers, and many more tasks that could result in a failed driving test if done incorrectly.

They also sent me study guides along with emails containing a few extra tips about avoiding a failed driving test that I would have never known otherwise. Like I said I knew I wasn’t a bad driving but just lacking a few key points and skills that the instructors were looking for which resulted in the first failed driving test.

When using the guide I didn’t have to memorize a handbook (which I hate doing anyways) and I was looking at real footage of a car driving. It was informative, engaging and really got me ready to bounce back from the failed driving test attempt.

The downside to the “Get Ready To Pass” guide is the fact that I didn’t have a real person there with me if I wanted to ask some detailed questions.  Thankfully I always had someone around to answer anything I didn’t understand from the guide.

With the guide in my arsenal and few more practice sessions I was able to beat my first failed driving test attempt to pass on the second try with ease. My little brother David experienced the same results after using the guide, also passing on his second attempt. Thankfully I don’t have to keep driving him around anymore.

How To Overcome Nerves To Avoid Failing Driving Test

Speaking from a personal standpoint, stress is one of the, if not the biggest factor contributing to a failed driving test. Stress leads to nervousness which opens up an entire can of worms when it’s time for you to take your driving test.

failed driving test stress

Pass a failed driving test by identifying what you’re worrying about.

In order to bounce back from my failed driving test I had to identify what exactly I was worried about and find a way to get over that worry.

So sit for a second and ask yourself, what exactly I’m I worrying about? Identifying the main cause of your nervousness is the first step to overcoming your nerves which could be the difference between a passed or failed driving test.

Are you worried over what going to occur on the test itself?
It is safe to assume that your driving test administrator will go over everything that going to happened at your road test before the test begins.

Are you afraid of a failed driving test result?

1 out of every 2 people end up with a failed driving test than passed so you’re not alone. A failed driving test doesn’t indicate that you’re a bad driver, it simply means that you failed to meet the driving test requirements that day. All you have to do is be prepared the next time you try.

Worried about the driving test examiner?
Despite the moody, miserable tales you may have heard about sadistic driving test conductors who get sick pleasures from handing out a failed driving test, majority of examiners are normal human beings just like you and I.

Worried about what others might think if fail?
This is no doubt a natural emotion, one that I also felt before my first failed driving test attempt. However, most people were sympathetic and supportive so I really didn’t have much to worry about and neither do you.

Worried about a failed driving test not meeting your deadline?

When I was about to taking my driving test I remember that prom was around the corner so I needed to pass so I could drive my date. You might be starting a new job, or just scheduled a week off work to dedicate to passing your driving test. Learning to drive can be much harder than sometimes anticipated. Not allowing yourself enough time to practice will result in a failed driving test. So please don’t rush it.

Once you’ve identified what the cause(s) of your nerves is/are you should be able to conquer it and move on to focus on the technical reasons of a failed driving test which are listed in the next post. If you can conquer those also you’ll be well on your way to recovering from the failed driving test and passing on your very next attempt.

Top Ten Reason for a Failed Driving Test

Technical tasks responsible for a failed driving test

A failed driving test is a real let down. Trust me when I say that because I’ve been there before myself. Back then, if only I had known what I know now instead of a failed driving test on my first attempt I would have aced it the very first try.

When I failed my driving test a whole lot of questions raced through my mind as to why I failed the test. I realized how my nerves had a lot to do with my failed driving test but when I later learned the top technical reasons for a failed driving test it all made sense because those were mistakes that I had made multiple times during my first attempt.

failed driving test top ten reasons

First five reasons for a failed driving test.

1. Maintaining an inappropriate speed
Most people are really nervous when they are taking their driving test so they tend to drive too slowly. Being hesitant will surely result in a failed driving test because it comes off as though you’re not very comfortable with the vehicle. Driving too fast will obviously also have negative results.

2. Lack of steering control
You need to be familiar with the handling of a car to avoid failing your test. Nothing screams road hazard louder than a driver who can’t properly steer their automobile.

3. Use of mirrors
You’re in line for a failed road test if you don’t check your mirrors constantly or don’t act according to the information you receive from your mirrors.

4. Incorrect use of signals
Your use of signals is one of the first things driving test administrators will not hesitate to fail you for. Not using, not cancelling or giving misleading signals will result in automatic fails on driving test.

5. Wrong Positioning on the road
When taking the test you are graded on your roundabouts and bends. Maintaining wrong positioning while executing these turns will result in failing your driving test.

Last five reasons for a failed driving test

6. Observation at junctions
When at stop signs and intersections lack of observation and poor judgments is another reason you will not pass your driving test.

7. Incorrect Positioning when turning right
One way streets are a way of driving in the real world that everyone will have to deal with. Wrong positioning on one way turns and junctions negatively influences your driving test results a.k.a failed driving test

8. Moving away safely
Inefficient observation and/or speed while pulling away from a stopped or parked position will also affect whether or not you receive a failed driving test result.

9. Reversing around a corner
As a driver you’ll need to know how to properly reverse a vehicle. Ineffective observation and a lack of accuracy are things that will fail you on your test.

10. Reverse parking
Wrong execution and inaccuracy during execution will also result in a failed driving test.
